Sufresca has developed an edible, biodegradable, water-based emulsion made from all-natural food ingredients with advanced modified atmosphere properties. When applied to a fresh fruit or vegetable, the solution creates a breathable coating. Minimal disturbances in the coating act as a partial barrier which allows optimal gas exchange. This slows down the post-harvest ripening and ripening processes, as well as the resulting degradation and rotting. This too solves the problems associated with the use of waterproof sealants.

This durable solution can extend shelf life up to several weeks, saving plastic packaging and extending shipping time. “Retailers and packaging companies are looking for cost-effective solutions to reduce waste and are environmentally friendly,” says Boker-Ferri. “Our natural formula can be easily integrated into existing industrial equipment, is adaptable to different coating techniques and is completely safe to use. New hope to end food waste and plastic use

Current food production is enough to feed twice the world’s population. Yet hunger remains a global epidemic. Food waste is a key contributor to this problem, as well as to the problem of green gas emissions. A colossal 40-60% of fruits and vegetables produced around the world are lost or wasted before they even reach consumers due to spoilage. A fresh concept for fresh products

Founded in 2020, the green solution from Sufresca, Ltd. is the result of a 15-year R&D effort led by the start-up’s CSO, Professor Amos Nussinovitch, in his laboratory at the Faculty of Agriculture, Food and Environment of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The research team collaborated to develop a sustainable solution for fresh produce, which is notoriously difficult to coat. The team was determined to find a holistic formula that could be adapted to a wider range of fresh produce. This meant going against traditional research perceptions that would make such a feat nearly impossible, in large part due to the diverse botanical nature of vegetables and fruits. “Each vegetable has its own unique traits, ”says Nussinovich. “In our search for the common denominator that connects the plant kingdom, these physiological distinctions had to be addressed. “

The long period of confinement effectively closed the Sufresca team in their laboratory. While this hampered the company’s marketing plans, it allowed them to increase their R&D efforts. Last year, the company made a breakthrough by optimizing its proprietary system to be applicable to different varieties of cucumber, mango, avocado and more, with minute nuances in the composition.

The start-up has just closed US $ 3.5 million in seed investment led by OurCrowd VC, Israel, followed by FEAT Investments group focused on food and agriculture and other investors. The tour supports a first US $ 1.3M previously from Agrinnovation and Rimonim.
