Patagonia has developed a huge fan cult, primarily for its selection of comfy fleeces, but you won’t have to wait until fall and winter to enjoy one of the brand’s most underrated pieces: the shorts.
Dubbed “Life’s Shorts” by the brand, the Patagonia Baggies are all-in-one shorts designed to take on all that life has to offer. Whether you’re hiking, rock climbing, kayaking or swimming, or just looking for comfortable shorts to wear during the summer, Patagonia Baggies may be the perfect fit for you.
First launched in 1982, the Patagonia Baggies have been a favorite piece of clothing for all manner of adventurers over the years – and today’s version is more refined, but just as classic as the original.
Design and functionality
The latest versions of Patagonia Baggies are lightweight, durable, and made from 100% recycled nylon. They have a water resistant coating to keep you dry from rain and light splashes, but they can also be used when fully submerged. Features like vertical side pockets help reduce drag when you’re in the water, and mesh interiors help water drain quickly so you dry faster when you’re out of the water.
Additional features like a drawstring waist, snap back pockets and an elastic loop key ring in the pocket help keep them secure on your body and personal items inside.
Patagonia bags are available in a variety of lengths, colors and patterns in men’s and women’s sizes. We put several styles to the test in our daily life during the summer. You can check out our reviews below.
Review of Patagonia Baggies 7 inch long bags for men
I got my first pair of Patagonia Baggies last summer, and loved them so much I needed some color for this year. My summer style is casual and pretty much consists of everyday sneakers and t-shirts, so the Baggies’ relaxed fit is perfect. If you choose the right colors, they go with everything. Personally, I prefer the 7 inch long version to the 5 inch shorts because they are not too high but still fall above the knee.
In addition to looking great, the Patagonia Baggies are very capable. They are lightweight and keep me a lot cooler than cotton shorts or chinos. Even though there is a net inside, they are not tight, restrictive, or uncomfortable. The most impressive feature was how quickly they dry. I wore them as a swimsuit and about 20 minutes after getting out of the pool they were completely dry. Every time I went swimming I was able to wear them for the rest of the day like regular shorts without feeling soggy and wet. âAmir Ismael, Insider Reviews Senior Journalist
Review of the Patagonia Baggies 5-inch Shorts for Women
Patagonia’s Baggies shorts are a staple in my summer wardrobe. I bought a few pairs last year and honestly I might buy another color just for the added variety. Their relaxed fit makes them perfect for any casual activity, and I often wear them when working from home because they are so comfortable. In a pinch, I also wore them for training as they are super light and they repel water and sweat. I’m a size 28 in jeans, so I could have gone small, according to Patagonia’s size chart, but took a size up to medium for a looser fit. âEllen Hoffman, Editor-in-Chief, Service Journalism
Review of the Patagonia Baggies 5 inch shorts for men
It’s probably an unpopular opinion, but the 5 inch Baggies shorts are just a bit too much short for me. Maybe it’s because I’m not that tall or maybe my legs are so skinny, but I didn’t like the length compared to the 7 inch Long Baggies. In the photo above, I actually wore them slightly below my waist to make them look a bit longer.
A lot of people can adopt the short shorts look, so if you want to show off some thighs, they are just as good as the longer pair when it comes to performance and comfort. You will find the same pockets, drawstrings and internal mesh.
While fit is the most important factor in choosing Baggies Longs or Baggies Shorts, color also plays a role. I have found that there are more colors available for Baggies shorts. I probably wouldn’t have another pair of 5 inch Baggies, but I couldn’t pass up that fiery red color. âAmir Ismael, Insider Reviews Senior Journalist
Review of the Patagonia Barely Baggies 2.5 inch Shorts for Women
I was worried the 2.5 inch length was too short, but at five feet two it fell closer to mid-thigh on top of me. It didn’t seem too short at all. The style is so versatile that you can easily wear them casually to run errands, water activities or hikes, and I love the fact that there is an extra pocket inside the shorts where you can store an identity card or a credit card.
The only problem I have personally encountered with the Barely Baggies is the size. I went with my typical XS based on the size chart and reviews, and they were too tight at the waist and too loose at the legs. If you are not sure about the fit I recommend taking one size up as you can still tighten them with the drawstring.

Disadvantages to consider
The Patagonia Baggies are so versatile and comfortable that I struggled to find anything that could be considered negative. Some people are strictly against the net on the inside of the shorts, but Patagonia has figured out how to include it without making it uncomfortable or restrictive, even with underwear on.
The bottom line
At $ 55 for all lengths, Patagonia bags are great value. They can easily switch from casual clothes to water activities or just be worn while lounging. Since some performance shorts and swimwear cost a lot over $ 55, being able to use them for all kinds of activities really makes them life shorts.
The variety of lengths, sizes and colors makes them a good addition to almost anyone’s wardrobe. Pick the right length for your style and you’ll almost certainly love them.
