My EPIC ND garden must not stop. Spring planning…

I have a garden, so people often mistake me for a gardener. Not true. I’m the warden of a 20′ x 20′ prison for plants. Many of its inhabitants will serve their time and be released.

Here are 10 plants that history shows – rarely make it out of death row.

Now I have “gardened” most of my life. I grew up with fruits and vegetables that always grew like crazy in my parents’ garden. It seems that they were real gardeners.

Let me say that I have had (and still have) success growing many fruits and vegetables. But I moved so much in my youth that there were always different garden plots and different experiences with successes and failures.

For the past decade I have presided over a 400 square foot weed forest in my backyard.

So for the first two planting seasons, I went a little overboard with my crop varieties. There were beets, radishes, onions, carrots, beans, peas, peppers, all existing in perfect harmony with the more native weed population. I tried putting black plastic on the space for fall and winter thinking it would kill all the weeds during the “off season”. It didn’t work out so well. One year I laid a more breathable mesh with rows cut out for garden plants. It didn’t work out so well. How about a few hay bales separated and scattered in space. That should retain moisture, right? Yes, more moisture for weeds! It didn’t work out so well.

Confession- I would make it up every year. He probably didn’t stand a chance.

The last point I should make is that there is too much space to maintain unless it is your full time job. I could consider it a job, because it pays off in SMALL POTATOES! This is where we will start.

So this is it. Next time we should discuss which garden plants I “almost” get by with.
