MARQUETTE, Mich. (WJMN) – Grills sizzled on the terrace of the Mariucci Family Beacon House as some UP legends threw themselves down for a good cause. Tom Izzo and Steve Mariucci swapped their trainer’s whistles for a set of pliers and a chef’s coat to raise money to help support the Beacon House.
“There is nothing more appropriate and timely than to see this helicopter hovering over it,” said Steve Mariucci.
“Every time we see this helicopter, we know that in a few minutes a family is going to call us saying my father, my brother, my mother, my sister, my son, my daughter,” said Mary Tavernini Dowling, CEO of Mariucci Family. said Beacon House. “The wonderful professionals at UP Health System, they are the ones who are going to take care of them and we know that we are going to welcome their family members and we are going to take care of them.”
With a mission to be a home away from home, the Beacon House aims to ease the stress for families when they are going through a difficult time.
“Since the hospital moved to this new location and we needed to be close, so we are able to be here with the generosity of so many people who have helped build this fabulous facility,” Mariucci said. “It was full since we had our grand opening which was just before Christmas so it was kind of a cool Christmas present for UP
“What this facility means for families is that some would be so moved when traveling from as far away as New Jersey, for example, these families were able to support their son as he recovered at the hospital here,” Gar Atchison, CEO of UP Health System-Marquette said.
Whoever wins, all proceeds from Thursday’s event went back to the Beacon House, but that hasn’t stopped Mariucci from telling everyone he thinks has won the title of Master of the Grill.
“Wait…this one says you voted for pork,” Mariucci said. “Thanks for saying that, but you have to take that off and go put it on the beef over there.”
