I want to start this article by saying that I am lactose intolerant and have just started eating red meat again after about a decade of being a vegetarian. So naturally when the opportunity arose to try a cheese-coated, meat-stuffed fast food product, I took the opportunity. I love the pain and the cheese. What can I say ?
Taco Bell recently welcomed back their Grilled Cheese Burrito and added the all new Double Steak Grilled Cheese Burrito to their menu. The steak version features a double serving of seasoned rice and steak, crunchy red strips, chipotle sauce, nacho cheese sauce, sour cream and a three-cheese blend wrapped in a hot flour tortilla. The burrito is topped with a layer of grilled, melted cheese. If you want to add extra spices, you can kick things up a notch by adding jalapeños.
I got to see if the Double Steak Grilled Cheese Burrito lives up to its name. Is it wrapped with double the steak and is it cheesy enough to carry the title of a grilled cheese burrito? We will see.
If you are looking for something to fill you up, this burrito is a great option. As I picked up my foil wrapped burrito, my first thought was: Dang, this thing has weight. Not only does the burrito look like it’s double-stuffed, but it’s a decent size both in length and in width. Once I unwrapped the burrito, I was instantly struck by the buttery and toasted smell of the grilled cheese. On top of that I was delighted to see a light coating of melted cheese, as promised.
Three steak bites later …
As someone who went without steak for almost a decade, I didn’t know what to expect. Frankly this was my first time trying the Taco Bell steak and I was pleasantly surprised.
My first bite was greeted with a thick cut of well-seasoned steak. It was tasty, flavorful, juicy and easy going. In my next bites, I was struck by an unexpected spice from the chipotle and nacho cheese sauces, which really boosted the flavor. The red tortilla strips added a nice crunch and texture to the burrito, while the rice balanced out the savory steak. After just a few bites I was pretty full, but still wanted to go back for more.
As for the cheese: it’s good. But I was more blown away by the taste of the steak than the cheese in the Double Steak Grilled Cheese Burrito. There were a few gooey bites where the cheese sauce, the grated cheese in the burrito, and the outer layer of cheese all mixed together well. But there were definitely some bites that got me thinking where is all the cheese? Adding extra grilled cheese on the outside of the burrito could probably help a lot. Or maybe it’s just me. I like cheese, remember?
Taco Bell’s Double Steak Grilled Cheese Burrito is filled with steak – TB didn’t disappoint there. The meat is incredibly well seasoned, the flavors pair well, and if you like to be full on baby food, this thing will definitely get you there. I wish the cheese was distributed more consistently throughout, however. One more thing: if you’re lactose intolerant like me, don’t forget to take a dairy pill first.
