Pittsburg County Commissioners on Monday awarded an offer for repairs to the roof of the Expo Center, which will be the facility’s first major project using American Rescue Plan Act funds.
The commissioners acted to accept an offer of $ 740,000 from Martin Roofing and to award the project to the company.
“I’m glad this is starting,” District 2 Commissioner Kevin Smith said after the commissioners awarded the offer.
Smith said the roof, which has a number of leaks, needs to be repaired before other projects at the exhibition center because water from a leaking roof could ruin other things inside. installation.
“This roof has to be done first,” Smith said.
The project does not require the removal of the entire existing roof of the building or the installation of a completely new roof. On the contrary, he asks that the current roof be reinforced with building materials.
He asks for the skylights on the roof to be removed.
“We will be replacing the skylights,” Smith said. Spaces where skylights are removed will be covered with metal roofing material.
Smith said the skylights have proven difficult to hold in weather conditions such as hailstorms, with a number of leaks around them. Even if there was no hole directly through a skylight, water would flow under the roof and insulation and leak elsewhere, he said.
Plans call for all screws and joints, as well as other parts of the roof, to be covered with a thick membrane coating, similar to epoxy, a group of chemical compounds used for coatings and adhesives in projects. of construction.
Work on the roofing project is not expected to begin until Martin Roofing has verified its bonds and other documents. After that, the commissioners will give the company the green light to continue.
Smith said the roofing work comes with a 10-year warranty.
District 3 Commission Chair / Commissioner Ross Selman and District 1 Commissioner Charlie Rogers joined Smith in a unanimous vote to award the bid for the exhibition center roof repairs to Martin Roofing, based in Wichita, Kansas.
In other actions related to new projects, the commissioners tabled an item calling for possible action to advertise outdoor installations at the Pittsburg County Exhibition Center and Fairgrounds. Smith said commissioners were awaiting more information on some of the specifications and plans needed for those who will bid on the project.
The commissioners also filed a point to reward a supplier for an LED lighting project at the Pittsburg County Courthouse, also pending more information.
