high school resume

Simon kicked off his final two seasons at Freehold Township having previously committed to Notre Dame and it was no surprise to teammates and coaches who have watched Simon throughout the baseball calendar that the Irish were interested. In his final two seasons in high school, however, Simon never really settled down, pitching to a 3.90 ERA (per seven innings) in his final two years with the Patriots while walking a total of 59 batters in 60 1/3 innings over the same span. Even though Simon had trouble navigating the strike zone, he still threw a 90s fastball and spun in moments of brilliance while pitching in a very tough Class A North Division of the Shore Conference .

After high school

Whatever happened at Freehold Township, Notre Dame was thrilled to have Simon, especially this season. Although walks have always been a problem (28 walks in 30 2/3 innings in 2022), Simon has used high-profile tricks to get high-profile outs for the Irish, striking out 56 batters on the season. Simon hit eight in five scoreless innings to take the win in a 3-0 victory over Virginia in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals, then hit eight in three scoreless relief innings against Texas Tech in the Regionals of the NCAA.

Why Teams Love It

If you’re going to walk as many batters as Simon, you need some dirty stuff to keep scouts interested and Simon has developed some terribly dirty stuff. He was clocked up to 101 miles per hour and sat in the mid-90s during his playoff outings for Notre Dame this spring. While his secondary pitches are still under construction, Simon’s slider has the potential to be a quality second pitch and his switch played well when launching into the Cape Cod League this summer.

Why Teams May Hesitate

While Notre Dame has given Simon a few starts during the 2022 season, he will almost certainly be considered a reliever by whichever team takes him in the draft. On top of that, reigning over his control while developing his secondary offerings will be a project for Simon and his new club, one that could take several years to perfect in the minor leagues.

Project or not, Simon always had a big arm and he became an even bigger arm than expected. More often than not, control issues stay with the pitchers, but it’s not uncommon for a pitcher to go from below average control to above average control. If teams like the stuff — and there’s a lot to like — Simon will be a Day 2 pick and maybe and soon enough.
